My Mission

Our students’ success begins with us – and there’s no investment more worthy than their education. That’s why I’m running for an at-large seat on the Rock Hill School Board.

My commitment to tomorrow’s leaders runs as deep as my roots here. As a father, Rock Hill native and small business owner, I understand that our children will become the backbone of our community one day.

Ensuring they reach their full potential requires a solid foundation, and strong leadership to lay it. I will work hard to create an environment where our students learn, thrive and grow. I will advocate for schools that are safe, inclusive and engaging.

Educational Platform

  1. Make returning to school five days a week (face to face) an option for families, in addition to virtual learning.
    • The achievement gap will continue to develop because students on A/B schedules are getting half the amount of time with their teacher that virtual students are receiving.
    • School is a safe haven for many students in our community.
    • Financial burdens are placed on many families with working parents who cannot stay home with their students on at-home learning days.
    • Students with services being provided (such as exception education services, speech, ESOL, etc.) would have a more beneficial experience with in-person instruction.
  2. Bring a business perspective to the School Board and continue to develop successful programs.
    • The appropriate allocation of resources is crucial.
    • We must evaluate the effectiveness of programs that are already in place.
  3. Implement life skills classes, job preparation classes and more trade classes in our high schools.
    • Life skills classes, such as money management and personal finance, time management, vehicle management and professional requirement, would greatly benefit our high school students. Some of these are currently offered as electives, but having a required class would help ensure our students are ready for life after high school.
    • Because many students go directly into the workforce instead of college, adding more trade classes would alleviate the scheduling issues that result from all four high school trade classes meeting at one location (ATC).
  4. Support and retain our amazing teachers.
    • We must support our teachers by providing them with the resources they need to teach effectively.
    • The provision of professional development training in specific content areas is another great way to strengthen our schools – and the incredible teachers that work there!

My Story

As a Rock Hill native, I grew up attending our public schools before graduating from The Citadel in 2005. I’ve worked for my family business, Burns Chevrolet Cadillac, for the past 13 years. As a small business owner, I have seen firsthand the importance of educating our community’s students.

I married Jennifer (Wallace) Burns, who is also a native of Rock Hill, in 2010. We have four wonderful children, three daughters and a son. Our daughters will begin kindergarten, third grade, and fourth grade in Rock Hill’s public schools this year and our son will attend preschool.

I am running for an at-large seat on the Rock Hill School Board because I care about the future and success of Rock Hill – not only as a parent, but also as a proud resident and a small business owner. Together we can ensure our students receive the best possible start.
